About
Karla Macedo is a graphic designer with a deep interest in design that helps create positive social impact. Karla is looking to refine her skills as she transitions to web work. During her time at Code for America she helped organize the Iconathon, a series of events that helped create the first-ever civic symbol suite. As a native Spanish speaker she understands the importance of bridging communication barriers through design. Karla also helped redesign and conceptualize the branding for Bostonavigator, Discover BPS, Wheres My School Bus, Building Boston, Boston Public Schools, and Boston Public Works. She hopes to continue to use design to bring communities together, tell stories, and inform.
What do you want to be doing?
I want work in a place that has the same values and morals as Code for America. I would like to be part of a team that is empowering people with their work. I hope to continue learning, and working with a team that cares about people centric design. I wish to help create a positive social impact through design, technology and innovation. I like to make things. But I don’t want to just push pixels, I want to help spread the word about innovative projects that can make peoples lives better through the design process.
What’s something you’ve learned?
This year has serverd to remind me of the power of design and that design can be by the people for the people, and still have an impact. That as designers we have a responsibility to, not simply make things, but create things that people can intelligently and naturally interact with. As fellows we were lucky to see the product through from beginning to end, through interviews with stakeholders, the creating of personas, development and lastly user testing. I have learned a great deal about the process that is project development and the importance of user centric design. And within that cycle I learned the value designers working directly with programers, how to systematically and structurally think about designs. I’ve learned how to organize, and communicate a concept with passion across the nation and the power of seeing people come together to collaboratively create.
