Strategic decisions will get made. This is one of those diamond hard truths that tend to irritate philosophy students. But then, what doesn't irritate them?

So, the next question is, "On what criteria?"

Hence the importance of a comprehensive strategy matched to the complexity of the challenge.

Articulate the goal. The real one. Not some hidden, personal or departmental one. Only when we agree on the stated goal can we begin to make the informed decisions necessary to achieve it.

It was Oliver Wendell Holmes who said, "I would not give a fig for the simplicity this side of complexity, but I would give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity."

And while I'm not sure a fig vs one's life is a fair – much less wise – tradeoff, I agree the guy was on to something.

Achieving exquisite simplicity is the difficult work of challenging assumptions and ensuring every decision supports the next on the way to achieving the goal.

I lead people toward goals. And in the process, enable them to grow personally and professionally and, for some, become leaders themselves. Read Less
