The pictures of flowers and plants were taken for each letter of the alphabet. e is a mathematical constant that is the base of natural logarithm. The flowers and plants are vestiges of the world just like letters are vestiges and base for any language.
The border was given to emphasize the bad environmental conditions of nature.
