Concept and design an original typeface.
My love of architecture and typography helped conceive my
concept. I decided to create an official typeface for Washington, D.C. I would
do this by taking the roman style letter carvings to a new and modern level.
Gaining inspiration from two very different typefaces, Caslon and Optima,
Arlington was created. My next step was to discover which aspects of Caslon and
Optima I wanted to combine to create my typefaces. Though Caslon and Optima are
different they share amazingly good aspects. I wanted to combine Caslon’s
historical feel and serifs with Optima’s modern stroke weight and proportions.
This marriage of qualities gave birth to Arlington.
