Senior Gallery show for Spencer McNeil and Kaylin Maanum.

  • Object or Something Like it was the Senior Show for Spencer McNeil and Kaylin Maanum.  The work shown included mixed media furniture and sculpture created by Spencer and prints and sculpture by Kaylin.  The exhibition was a culmination of the direction our work took in our final year at Knox College, and somewhat of a retrospective of our time in the studio.  The gallery show was paired with presentations from the artists.  

    For me, the show was an opportunity to share my thoughts on how art objects, in this case furniture, should be experienced.  My college career was a persistent battle between form and function, and while I had a desire to create interesting objects, I feel that without some kind of tactile experience of the object, the viewer is missing an entire dimension of the work.  By creating furniture objects, specifically seating, I was able to encourage the viewer to physically interact with the piece.  My interest in Architecture fueled the direction of the work, because I'm looking to create an experience, whether that be through a structure, or a piece of furniture, which is architecture on a human scale. 

    This collection was an exercise in materials, while maintaining a certain function.  The pieces below use wood, metal, concrete, lexan, rubber, cardboard, and many other found and salvaged materials.
