Copy Semi Grotesk, the typeface designed by Thomas Mettendorf, is a mix between a slab serif, serif, and monotype typeface categ-ories. Copy Semi Grotesk is a typeface that stands on its own, in a unique category, and therefore represents a sense of duality which is how I relate it to the subject of subliminal perception.
Subliminal perception occurs when you are not consciously aware of receiving information, or learning, yet the information is still stored in your mind; it reaches the individual on a subconscious level but affects one on a conscious level, thereby adding to that layer of duality. Since Copy Cut, with its angular cuts, is about breaking away from the ordinary shapes and basic design, so too is the concept of this book: to break through the meaning of these subliminal messages and realizing the underlying true content. The message of this narrative is to educate the reader about subliminal messaging, how it evolved and became a subject of fear and confusion, and to distinguish between fact and fiction. It is an exaggerated approach with intriguing and dizzying effects to give the illusion of subliminal messages throughout the book, allowing the reader to interpret the information for his/herself.
