Description
For this project we had to design a series of movie cards in the style of a modernist. I chose to emulate the modernist Paul Rand, and I couldn't think of a better set of movies to pair with Rand than Mel Brooks. The four Mel Brooks movies I chose were "Spaceballs", "Young Frankenstein", "History of the World: Part 1", and "Blazing Saddles." I designed the backside of the card based on Rand's cover design for Ad Magazine in 1941. I then appropriated his designs from the Ohrbach's ads he did for the front side of the cards. His Ohrbach's ads typically included a cut out black and white photo that was interacting with individual letter blocks. I packaged the four cards in a popcorn box sleeve which was designed in the general style of Rand with cut out shapes.
