Signs is an interactive installation that physically connects symbols to words.
The machine was developed through research on intercultural hand gestures and how they relate to common American hand gestures. Three rounds of progressively more focused surveys gathered data from students at schools abroad, American students at their home institutions, and international students studying in America. Six basic gestures were distilled based on familiarity, popularity, meaning variations across cultures, and complexity. As a result, the content represents current conventions collected from the surveys. (documented in process book)
The designed form is based on an amalgamation of various memory techniques (play in learning, touch and memory, visual feedback). It isolates symbols, places words on a pedestal, and physically connects them with an electric current. The user connects the circuit, a light bulb goes off and a memory is formed.
