I’m originally fromthe city of Mumbai, India and came to the United States of America three years ago. In my early months here, the initial conversations with an American always steered to a common direction that had reactions like, “ Oh you are from India?I love Indian food!” or “The song and dance culture of Bollywood really amuses me” or “I know Gandhi and Mother Teresa” or “I have watched Slumdog Millionaire”. I realized that the first impressions that an American has of India is usually the stereotypes that may fall under two categories, the softpowers of the country or the drawbacks like poverty or dense population. The following information chart is based on the scientific feedback I received from Americans of different age groups and states.
For this project, I was highly inspired by the approach of data visualization by David McCandless in his book, ‘ A Visual Miscellaneum: A colorful guide to the world’s most consequential trivia’.
