This project started in 2002 as an extension to a poster series, created after some xenophobic remarks and statements began coming out of the government, and from the media. It was a response to the preponderance of American flags on EVERYTHING after the September 11th incident.
I was insulted that something that had come to mean a lot to me, the flag, was being used to stir up a type of hatred the dangers of which, we are only now becoming aware.
The If Patriotism is a Flag… series takes this premise to its logical conclusion. If all the things that is America and American were to become flags, then we would see just how silly, expressive, poignant and true this statement may be. And what the American flag would look like.
At this time there are 49 flags in the artwork. It is a piece of art that is continuing to grow.
