Description
Hand-rendered and hand-cut works from the past several years; some personal, some for class, some that started out being for class and then I got obsessed. Other samples to come...
  • Hand Work
Cut paper, watercolor, hand illustration, hand cut type, and other miscellany
  • A collection of hand-rendered pieces, most of which started out as class projects, but I often took them far beyond what was expected or required. I find the process of creating work by hand contemplative and utterly absorbing. I also find that the inspiration I get by creating at least a portion of a project by hand before switching to the computer results in totally unique solutions.
  • Marilyn in Type
    collage; hand-cut paper; 9"x12"
A class exercise in the tonal value of type, taken to the extreme. And 20 hours later, the sun came up.

  • Starburst
collage; watercolor on hand-cut watercolor paper; 9"x12"
Another experiment in cut paper insanity. I washed two sheets of watercolor paper in sunset colors, cut the starburst shape out of one of the sheets and reconstructed it on top of the other sheet. Just because. I created a second piece using the negative space cut from the first starburst. I'll post it later.

  • Climbing Caracol
    Marker rendering; 11" x 14"
The assignment was to draw a scene from memory (not from a photo). I chose the exhausting climb to the top of one of Caracol's jungle pyramids in Belize. That's my friend Ricki in front of me. Our intrepid friend Kelly is one of those little tiny people way up near the top.

  • Sketch for Soap Box Package
    marker and colored pencil; thumbnail
An early sketch for a line of bath and body products. My inspiration was 'naughty'
French postcards from the early 20th century. This particular sketch shows the beginning of the hand-drawn type treatment that I later more fully developed for the name of the product line.

  • Bath Behavior Type Treatment - Initial Drawing
    pencil; 4" x 10"
Initial pencil rendering for my Bath Behavior product line type treatment. I wanted something a little idiosyncratic. The B's later developed ball terminals below the baseline.
