The challenge for this project was to create a packaging design alternative to a product that is currently over-packaged. The new package also needed to be environmentally responsible.
During my research, there seemed to be a lot of waste associated with cereal packaging, even though cardboard is recyclable, most cereal boxes contain an inner plastic bag liner. I wondered if a package could be designed based on the standard "reduce, reuse, recycle" motto. Could the package become reusable, use less material, and use eco-friendly, sustainable materials?
This cereal container prototype is made out of balsa wood, which is a fast-growing, sustainable, and recyclable raw material. Balsa wood is also durable and lightweight, making a good choice for packaging and shipping. The container is reusable, which means that replacement cereal could be bought in plastic bags made from eco-friendly soy or corn plastic.
