Designed for Eastern Michigan University's New Student Orientation Assistant (NSOA) training introductions. EMU's Fusion Orientation program consists of a four day orientation model for incoming first-year students. A three day training event happens prior to Orientation. On the first day, a recognition ceremony takes place to acknowledge the various volunteers that have been with the program for 3+ years.
The challenge: The current format of the award ceremony was taking too long, people were having issues connecting with it, and people were not paying attention.
The Solution: The idea behind the design (as well as the event planning) was to significantly reduce the time of the entire award process, while using a Twitter format to make messages concise and to the point. The 140 character limit helped push a 16 person recognition ceremony along much faster than the earlier counterparts. Not only did this serve a purpose for scheduling, but also created an interactive hearth that NSOAs could use throughout the course of the three days of training and the four days of orientation. A potentially 30-45 min ceremony was reduced to just more than 15 minutes.
