This is a poster I designed to advertise a retrospective of E.E. Cummings, hosted by the Smithsonian Institution. The main objective was to choose a quote of his and render it in a way that reflected the essence of who he was. The intended audience was potential patrons of the retrospective. I wanted the poster to appeal to those who were familiar with E.E. Cummings' work, as well as art and poetry fans in general.
One particular challenge was figuring out how to illustrate E.E. Cummings' beautiful quote "lovers alone wear sunlight," in a way that portrayed the man himself. While researching, I discovered that not only was E.E. Cummings a brilliant poet, but he was also quite passionate about painting. With this in mind, I decided to incorporate various elements of hand rendered watercolor. I also referenced E.E. Cummings' unconventional orthography by not using any capital letters in certain sections of text.
