As a leader in early childhood learning and development in the Intermountain West, Discovery Gateway children's museum is dedicated to educating the public, parents, caregivers, and children that play is learning. As Creative Director for the Museum, I wanted to center the Museum's core messaging on this idea by using illustrations of children. I began working with our taleneted illustration/graphic intern, Celeste Smith, on the initial sketches of a boy who had an exposed imagination coming out of his head. The first illustration of the boy was so successful, that our team decided to work together to create more kids for different times through the year. I hired Celeste to create the additional illustrations with my art direction. The illustrations represent energetic, enthusiastic, and diverse kids whose minds are bursting with great ideas, inventions, and dreams after visiting Discovery Gateway's inspiring exhibits and programs. Each of the kid's heads are illustrated with representations of all our exhibits and the hands-on interactive playing they do every day. We now use these as our main brand illustrations on all Museum brand publications, print, environmental graphics, marketing campaigns, and as the central idea of our website.
