In my Electronic Page Layout course we were tasked with developing a set of movies for the Criterion Collection. The movies had to fit in with Criterion's standards of important classic and contemporary films and follow the standards Pentagram set for Criterion's box design. I chose 3 films from the director P.T. Anderson: There Will Be Blood, Punch-Drunk Love, and Boogie Nights. His films usually have dark themes such as alienation, depression, and dysfunctional relationships but he also commands a great control of composition with very tight color palettes. With this in mind I chose a stark black background to set up my two-color illustrations of various imagery found in each respective film. These objects might seem minor at first until you've seen his films and realize everything has a purpose and none is insignificant.
