- Ice Rinks around the United States / Bear Paws
- Families who go to the ice rink and come ill prepared
- The idea behind this project was to find a solution to a common problem. I work in an ice rink and the most common thing I get asked is “Do you rent jackets?” and other variations of that. I also have observed that people tend to forget to bring socks or things to keep them warm. I came up with a scarf kit in which a pocket is sewn into the scarf and the pocket contains a hat, mittens, and a pair of socks for children, and a headband, gloves and socks for adults. There is a button on the scarf so that the whole kit can be wrapped up in one convenient package and everything is kept together. The button also functions for parents to button the scarf around their child so they do not lose the scarf or risk it falling off on the ice. The design is based off of quilts that you find up north where it is frequently cold and incorporates elements that come to mind when you think of ice skating. The name Bear Paws was chosen because bears are frequently associated with winter and they are known to stay warm in the winter with their coats.
This project recently received a Gold Student ADDY award at the local AAF Jacksonville ADDY awards in February 2011, and a Silver Student ADDY award at the regional level.
