BLVD

The Boulevard Business Association commissioned a locally relevant design to be painted on trash and recycle bins on El Cajon Boulevard. The objective was to bring color to their community, reduce the amount of graffiti, and make pedestrians aware of and encourage use of the new recycle bins. I researched El Cajon’s historical and contemporary landmarks in the area, and came up with this set of designs. The teal design was inspired by the terrazzo floor tile that was in front of the old States Theater, that was built on El Cajon Blvd in 1938 and has since been torn down. The current Midway Gate that identifies the middle of the community and the trolley station under it inspired the salmon design. I choose the colors teal and salmon because they are the Boulevard’s community colors, so use of them reinforces the sense of community branding already set in place. I included simple vector symbols of a person throwing trash away and the recycle sign to let people know which bin is designated for each type of materials.
