SURFACE Magazine

  • SURFACE Magazine explores manifestations of artistic expressions on all types of surfaces (fashion, architecture, and nature), but more specifically, offers a poetic yet refined visual study of the intersection of high fashion and surface design.

This publication is designed by a team of graphic designers within Surface World, a transdisciplinary studio class in the Illustration Department of ArtCenter College of Design. The class setting is a collaborative collective comprised of students from diverse art and design backgrounds: Illustration, Graphic Design, Product Design and Environmental Design. The client, Neiman Marcus, provided its four display windows along Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills to showcase surface designs created by the surface designers (Illustration, Product and Environmental Designers). Each of the four window displays showcased pattern designs based on a specific sartorial motif: Stripe, Floral, Plaid and Pop. The Graphic Design team created a publication that documents the visual story of the surface patterns of each window with an editorial twist and reinterpretation, as well as typographic treatment for the display windows.
