Chimera Art and Literary Journal showcases selected work from Edinboro University students. Each year a soirée is held to represent the work in a professional setting at the Erie Art Museum. Working as a team of designers, we created the thirteenth edition of the publication. When we first began exploring visual directions, we knew we wanted to try something that hadn’t yet been explored in the history of the journal. Previous editions had relied on blind embosses, unique papers and inks, and even a fragmented format to differentiate themselves. However, none had attempted the approach that seemed most natural to us: unique, abstract imagery, created specifically for the book and used throughout. After some experimentation, we found a perfect marriage of aesthetic and concept. Steel wool, when scanned at a high resolution and then manipulated through a number of digital processes, yielded a visual we found simultaneously beautiful and unnerving, much like the idea of luck.
