These concept and color explorations were for Maybelline Manga Shine, which years later was released into the market as Miss Manga—which changed its complete focus to volume. In the working stage for Manga Shine, the emphasis was on the doll lash idea along with providing high shine. The inspiration comes from Japanese Manga comics in which the females have innocent, doll-like large eyes and flirty, long, curved lashes. The design for this mascara packaging takes a cue from that, and converges it into a modern style that would appeal to mass consumers in the U.S. market. The bright color combinations bring a fresh look to mascara packaging, away from the typical blacks, reds, pinks and golds—while also celebrating the vivid comic nature of Manga.
