starting from a microscope image taken of a saturated crystal structure under polarized light, i explore the way in which this data may be manipulated in scale through a process by which i translate the photographic data into a 3D surface mesh, then subdivide and laser-cut it in sections. altogether the piece spans a 3ft by 8ft area. Further, back-lighting the piece with a slowly moving source casts shadows whose detail emerge and recedes with the motion.
Work in progress.
note: the lighting mechanism needs work. perhaps, instead, the piece belongs in a window with a slow natural light forming the peaks and valleys of this microscopic landscape as the light reveals the slide's features.
