Anne Kerns

Anne Kerns
Anne C. Kerns, AIGA
I earned a BS in Advertising Design from the University of Maryland, College Park. Learning design before the computer was so ubiquitous taught me an appreciation for the production processes behind print design.

I have held design and management positions in the Washington, DC, area for over 15 years. Previous engagements included Hecht's Department Stores, Powell Tate Public Relations, Hirshorn Zuckerman Design Group, and seven years with The Madison Design Group (MDG). As the art director at MDG, I was intrinsically involved in everything from marketing strategy and promotion, to systems implementation, to art direction and design.
Adjunct Design Instructor
I am an adjunct design instructor at George Mason University, have given seminars at area high schools, and generally try to educate anyone who wants to know more about things like grid structures, color theory, and kerning. Yes, isn't it ironic that I actually have a typographic term for a last name?

At GMU, I have taught Senior Design Project on a regular basis since 2006. I lead a jam-packed course bringing everything together in this final, capstone class: concept development, typography, professional practice, print production, and presentation and communication; culminating in a book that the students write, design, and produce. The class blog is http://avt498.wordpress.com/

From time to time I also teach Typography I.
